5. Salomon S/Lab X-Alp

The market for dedicated ski-touring boots is growing. Last year Arc’teryx announced a boot that allowed for incredible ankle mobility, but still provided respectable stiffness for downhill skiing. Now Salomon, Arc’teryx’s cousin brand (they’re part of the same company), has entered the fray with a boot that’s equally hike-worthy, but even more skiable — meaning it’s stiffer on the downhill. With its 3D rotating carbon cuff, the S/Lab X-Alp provides 12 degrees of external and 23 degrees of internal rotation, allowing you to bend through a natural range of motion during uphill skins. Yet after rigorous testing with Salomon athletes, the company decided to beef up the reinforcement points for better downhill performance. After all that, the boots still weigh in at a little over 2.5 pounds. [$1,000; salomon.com]
