Help Yourself: Tony Robbins' Four Tips for Mental Fitness

There's no shortage of self-proclaimed experts claiming to possess all the tools for leading us to a happier and more successful existence. It's a business where track records matter, and nobody's is more impressive than larger-than-life coach Tony Robbins'. The world citizen delivers his strategies year-round to arena-sized audiences, when he’s not consulting titans of industry and entertainment in private sessions. Though skeptics remain, it's hard to argue with 39 years of experience, and an ever-growing flock of followers.

Now you can catch a glimpse of how Robbins commands a stage without leaving your couch. For the first time ever, he allowed cameras into one of his famous Date With Destiny seminars, and the result is a documentary I Am Not Your Guru, now available on Netflix. But Robbins is quick to express that, despite director Joe Berlinger‘s effort, what you see is only a sampling of the breakthroughs that occur onsite and the lessons he has to teach.

“People come to me because they’re hungry,” says Robbins. “Now that hunger can be either for the tangible or the intangible, usually the answers are the same. You hear that it takes years for real change, but that is simply not true. I’ve seen people change overnight for the better.”

Change starts in your mind, so while Robbins was in New York, we asked the icon for his advice how to improve your mental fitness.

Prepare for the Day in 10 Minutes
Mornings can be especially stressful for people who have a heavy workload throughout the day, says Robbins. Because of this, he created a process he calls Priming, a ritual that takes about 10 minutes. “If you don’t have 10 minutes for yourself at the beginning of the day, then you’ve already lost,” he says. “Our brains have been conditioned for survival and not for happiness. So we need to do a little rewiring.”

Priming

  1. Take three minutes to be grateful (think of this like meditation) for your life, both the big and the small. It can be something simple, like the wind on your face or a child’s smile.
  2. Take three minutes to give thanks for your body and the people you love.
  3. Take three minutes to visualize three goals that you want to accomplish in your day. Then see them as completed. This will help you program your nervous system out of fearing potential failure, and sometimes even unlock the solutions.

Always Look to Learn
He plays life coach to hundreds of thousands of people a year, but Robbins is the first to admit that he is still learning, himself. “I’ve been doing this for 39 years,” he says. “But if I meet a meet a couple who has been together for 50 years and still having great sex, I’m going to ask them their secret.”

Find Places That Inspire You
Robbins travels the world for his seminars, but when he's seeking tranquility he heads to Fiji. “There are incredible waterfalls there that are incredibly moving,” he says. Following a visit, he decided to buy a home and even open his own Namale Plantation Resort, in the town of Savusavu. “The people there have developed an incredible community. Strangers will smile at you, and there is always music in the air. Find a place that makes you want to be outdoors as much as possible.”

Eat for Your Overall Health
Formerly a vegan, Robbins had a medical scare when he started introducing fish to his diet and suffered extreme mercury poisoning. “I almost died,” he says. “I was eating swordfish and tuna and built an incredibly painful amount of mercury in my blood. I recommend that anyone who eats fish should get a blood test when they can.” Now his diet consists mostly of vegetables and small amounts of land-based protein throughout the week. “It is important to eat your veggies.”
