Most coughs, sore throats, colds, cases of bronchitis, and even some ear and sinus infections are caused by viruses, not bacteria. That means antibiotics will do nothing to fight them. Just wait it out and do the things your mom would tell you to do like drinking fluids and taking a decongestant, Munger says. Not only is it a waste to take antibiotics if you don’t have a bacterial infection, it contributes to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, so the drugs won’t be effective when they’re actually necessary.
