The intention behind this trend was good. Proper “belly breathing” is crucial to everything from resistance training to managing stress, and most of us don’t know how to do it. But it’s bad enough that we can’t get anywhere without firing up Google Maps. We should be able to breathe without looking down at our phones.

Instead: Take a meditation class. By cutting that wireless cord, you’ll be able to summon your Zen whenever you want, using just the power of your brain. Alternatively, hit up a coach or a personal trainer. Most can provide instruction on proper breathing technique, as well as some basic exercises.
