Ignoring the Cardinal Rule: Nothing New On Race Day
You know all those people who wear the freebie race T-shirts on the day of the race? Well, for starters, it's a little bit like wearing a band's T-shirt to their concert, we think, but beyond that, those people are tempting fate in a way that could very well end up with horribly bloodied nipples. Likewise, the really nice new socks you bought at the expo? Put 'em directly in your suitcase and wear them on your first run after the marathon unless you want to risk developing a blister at mile six on race day. And the same goes for food and fuel: don't eat anything different, don't drink anything different... don't do anything different. Your long runs help you build up mileage and stamina, yes, but just as importantly, they should serve as a dress rehearsal for the real thing.
