Hitting the Pool With Family
The lazy river doesn’t count (unless you’re swimming upstream). But just chasing your kids around the pool, or playing an all-out game of Marco Polo can get your heart rate way up. “It depends on how active your kids are,” says Rappoport, but, if they’re crazy-frenetic, she adds that you could burn more calories shepherding them than logging endless freestyle laps (400 to 500 calories per hour). Plus, water activities are low-impact, so if you’re nursing any kind of injury this summer, the pool is the way to go.
