Copeland knows that for the types of expeditions he goes on, mental preparation is far more important than physical. He is a big fan of visualization, each night transporting himself to the ice to get a sense of what it will look and feel like. “It’s mental equity,” he says. “It’s something I do naturally, and have come to realize it plays a big part in building my drive and motivation so that once I’m out there, I don’t quit.”
