Train For an Expedition by … Going on an Expedition

To prepare for his most recent North Pole adventure Copeland hauled a 300-pound sled 400 miles across the Simpson Desert in Australia (and broke a record in the process). The desert crossing did much more than prepare him physically — it was also a way to test his relationship with his expedition partner. “It’s one thing to be a good athlete,” says Copeland, “but being able to test each other’s mental game, and our ability to push and pull each other, provides a whole other level of confidence. The Simpson gave us a chance to identify our strengths and weaknesses, streamline our systems, and, most important, acquaint ourselves with the snores and smells of the oh-so-intimate tent life.”
