“Alcohol depletes a broad range of vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, enzymes, proteins, and minerals from your body,” says Dr. Carolyn Dean, a medical and naturopathic doctor. “The kingpin to this depletion is magnesium, which is the anti-stress mineral that most people with a hangover are deficient in.”
When your body is rebelling against you, Dean says you should combine nutritional magnesium and vitamin C to combat the pain. “Nutritional magnesium prevents platelet aggregation, which can cause blood-vessel spasms and the pain of a hangover,” she says. Mix magnesium citrate powder with water or a drink high in vitamin C, like orange juice, and sip on it throughout the day.
