In Minnesota High Schools, Hockey Hair Is an Art Form

While hockey tends to get relegated to fourth or fifth most popular team sport in the United States — depending on whether or not the World Cup is on — there's one thing the sport offers that you won't get watching Monday Night Football or the Golden State Warriors blowing out their opponents: epic hair. And if the annual Minnesota State High School All Hockey Hair Team videos are any indicator, the Land of 10,000 Lakes leads the universe in finely tuned mullets and Dawson's Creek–era James Van Der Beek hairdos.

As judged in this year's Minnesota State High School All Hockey Hair Team compilation, there's no shortage of flowing locks and short in the front, long in the back looks this year. But one persistent trend throughout the 2016 batch is the shaving of little lines into the sides, à la Patrick Kane when playoff time comes around.

Of course, no great competition comes without a little controversy. And this year, the number-one-hair ranking actually went to four players from one team, rankling more than a few high school hockey fans. But that's life when it comes to hockey hair.
