Filmed in Imax 3D, the new film Hubble 3D offers a view of the world typically reserved only for astronauts.
by Corey Seymour
Hubble 3D is a new film that attempts to layer a patina of melodrama — can the space telescope be fixed by the death-defying space walks of our brave astronauts? — on what otherwise might have been a routine repair mission last May. Fact is, the reasons to see it are both simple and obvious: zero-Gspace walks to repair the space telescope, with Earth as the backdrop, filmed in Imax 3D. (When the Hubble’s doors swing open, you’ll duck.) We screened an early version with Mike Massimino, one of the mission’s astronauts. His verdict: “It’s okay for astronauts to cry, isn’t it?” Earlier, he’d tried to explain what he’d seen in space: “The thought that came to mind was that this is too beautiful; this is not something that people are supposed to see.” It might be cheating, then, but Hubble 3D opens on March 19. I didn’t see this one. It has got to be interesting. It looks like 3D is going to become very basic like color television in a few years.
