The best in off-road adventures in the wilds of Arizona and New Mexico, whether you’re looking for wildlife by night vision, grisly crime scenes, or old movie locations.

“If we find any snakes of scorpions, I’ll bring ‘em to you,” says one of the guides of Stellar Adventures, which leads midnight tours of Arizona’s Tonto National Forest by night vision. The jeep tour ($165; stellaradventures.com) is one of several great new ones in the Southwest, ranging from wildlife adventure (Stellar also uses Hummers to track panthers and bears) to downright eerie.

Roch Hart, an Albuquerque ex-cop, takes wannabe private investigators to crime scenes in the surrounding deserts, including outlaw hideouts and sites of unsolved murders ($115; nmjeeptours.com).

If those are too off-color, Sedona’s A Day in the West offers more family-friendly trips, such as locations where old John Wayne flicks were shot ($55; adayinthewest.com).
