We tested several portable chairs to find three that won’t let you down.

Cape Cod Beach Chair Surfside Recliner
Classic styling, five recline positions, and wide armrests help make up for the shallow cup holders and the somewhat stiff canvas seat. Get the lighter 8.5-pound acacia frame, not the 14-pound yellow balau version. [$140; capecodbeachchair.com]

GCI Outdoor Unifold Recliner
It’s homely, sure, but the Unifold Recliner hits the beach-chair sweet spot. Three recline positions, a bottle pouch, a carrying case with a strap, and a comfy seat with mesh inserts cover the basics. But what won us over was the slots in the armrests, perfect for holding a wineglass or fishing rod. [$60; gcioutdoor.com]
REI Comfort LTG
If portability is a priority, then REI’s six-pound offering is your winner. No recline positions or armrests — just a shoulder strap for carrying and a narrow yet supportive seat with a smartly designed sliding lumbar pad and a mesh pocket in back. With the ground so close, you won’t miss the cup holders. [$35; rei.com]

I bought the REI a year ago and have to say it is excellent. Comfortable and light, it has sat in the back of my open pickup in Florida salt air and sun and it is as good as the day I bought it. And for $35 buy 2 or 3 and still be ahead of the rest.
