Racing Lobster Boats

Travel

The most unlikely of vehicles take to the water in a summer-long circuit of races that you won’t want to miss.

Don’t let the postcard-perfect Maine scenery fool you. These souped-up lobster boats fly as fast as 64.1 mph down a narrow strip of water lined with spectators who’ve rafted their boats together into a floating Mardi Gras. Racers enter vessels with names like Wet Dream and Home Brew, and this year, boater Steve Johnson showed up at the races in a 1994 convertible Pontiac Sunbird fashioned atop a boat, proving that these races never get boring. It’s the kind of event that seems one unfortunate accident away from being illegal. Go see it before it is. (July 25, Friendship, Maine, mainescoast.com)
