Before 25,000 onlookers, freestyle motocross rider Trigger Gumm launched his Honda CR500 off a 22-foot-tall kicker at more than 85 mph in Ipswich, Australia, on May 14. When he safely touched down three seconds later on a 10,000-ton mound of dirt, Gumm had jumped an amazing 277.5 feet, smashing Ryan Capes's 260-foot unofficial world-record jump. "When I came up over the landing I knew I had it," says the 37-year-old California native, who bent the bike's subframe on impact. "Ten feet out, I knew I was basically so high, coming down with such velocity, every muscle in my body clenched up and I prepared for a very, very hard landing."
