The Year: 1971

The Winner: Charles Coody

Should Have Won: Jack Nicklaus

Why is golf like this? Why is it so weird? A strong man could lose his mind watching this shit. Back in the waning days of Nixon's America, a gentleman duffer named Charles Coody won the Masters. Who was Charles Coody? A journeyman with three tour victories over the course of a two-decade career. How did Charles Coody win the Masters? I don't know. I wasn't born yet. But here is a short list of the players just beneath him on the final leader-board: Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Gary Player, and Tom Weiskopf. THEY ARE ALL LEGENDS, AND FOR FOUR DAYS IN APRIL 1971 CHARLES COODY WAS SLIGHTLY BETTER THAN THEM ALL. What does it mean? What are we to make of it? Until more information can be gathered and understood, we have no choice but to demarcate this outcome as unacceptable. The Year: 1971
