The Year: 2008

The Winner: Trevor Immelman

Should Have Won: Tiger Woods

It's not exactly reasonable to term Trevor Immelman's victory at the 2008 Masters a fluke. The South African played brilliantly the first three days and held the lead after each of those rounds. He was far enough ahead to shoot a lousy 75 on Sunday and still win by three over Tiger Woods. He was certainly the best entrant at Augusta that year, so it is with a certain trepidation that we must declare Immelman's triumph unacceptable. Trevor Immelman is a nice player who has won twice on the PGA tour and an additional four times on the European Tour during his eleven-year career. He has struggled with injuries in recent years and briefly lost his tour card in 2014. WHY DID HE BECOME BOBBY JONES FOR FOUR DAYS??? It makes no sense. This happens in golf, in a way that it doesn't in other sports. Treveon Graham doesn't suddenly turn into Magic Johnson and win the Hornets an NBA championship. Nor should he. It would be wrong and it would be a scandal. But Trevor Immelman goes utterly nuts, and deprives Tiger Woods of what we now know would probably have been his last major victory. I'm an open-minded person, but this is not okay.
