A Time Trial Adds Suspense During the First Week
Often the Tour’s first week is devoted solely to long, flat stages, but for 2018, there’s a 35-kilometer team time trial on stage 3. Located in Cholet, the stage will likely run over mostly flat terrain. In a departure from the past, though, the Tour will race with teams of eight, instead of the usual nine. That may leave some team leaders more isolated than they’d like during this early test. The wind in the Cholet area could pose a challenge to teams trying to hold their tight, streamlined formation. This stage offers an early opportunity for Froome and his powerful Team Sky to distance rivals.
