In keeping with the devil may care, let's just fuck it and see what happens spirit of 2016, this year's summer games in Brazil seemed like a pretty bad idea overall. With fears of pandemic, poorly allocated resources, security concerns, and the overarching corruption that is part and parcel of the Olympic experience, there seemed to be no shortage of things that could go wrong. Thankfully the worst never came to pass and the two-week competition was resplendent with remarkable performances by perennial greats and newcomers alike. Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps continued their astounding runs of dominance in their respective sports, while Simone Biles and the U.S. women's gymnastics team won over legions of fans and became stars with their gold medal winning performance. Considering the range of possible outcomes, the Rio games were a skin of their teeth success.

MVP: Usain Bolt

Runner Up: Simone Biles
