The new Compact series offers a great selection of all-arounders. On longer rides they offer top quality functionality. The stretch mesh pocket or helmet flap offers extra storage. When it comes to an extended day trip, then abracadabra, you can expand it and get more into the main compartment.
Yes & No
Sorry, it just didn't seem that the "vent" system worked as claimed once I got this pack loaded. I had wanted an AirControl suspension system and inadvertently ordered the COMPACT EXP.12 I liked the waist belt system and the layout of the different compartments, esp the pump pouch and hidden rain cover. As soon as this model arrived and I realized my mistake, I ordered the correct model (RACE EXP AIR) and did a load test/packing test side by side comparison. Fully loaded with my usual overkill of stuff plus filling the 3L bladder, I discovered the following: 1) a loaded EXP12 felt like a sausage on my back and the advantage of it's suspension all but disappeared. Same load on the Race EXP and I still had 1" TO 2" of open air clearance between my back and the pack. Just as I wanted. 2) Initially the COMPACT EXP appeared to probably hold more of my gear but I was surprised to find out that the RACE Air held everything, just in 2 zippered pockets instead of the more numerous ones in the COMPACT EXP. 3)Waist belt very nice as well as the adjustable ( up and down) chest strap. 4) the 2 side pouches should have some sort of way to cinch the top so items won't fall out accidently. Synopsis-hey Deuter, why not combine the advantages of the two packs for the bikers out there that do extended full day rides in the backcountry. You pack carries great but I could use 1 or 2 more compartments to separate out my gear,3 at a minimum. The small pouch on the RACE EXP AIR just barely holds a couple sunglass cases with a little room left over. This means I have to use the large pouch for spare tube, rainjacket, long sleeve shirt, lunch, camera, possibles" bag, binocs, tp. ALSO, how about some spare d rings/loops to attach extra stuff on the outside if need be. Your pack is extremely well made and I am looking forward to many trips with it. Keep trying!!
