Luxurious Travel Bags from a Luxury Belt Maker

Credit: Anderson's

You may know Anderson’s, the Italian leather goods company with an English name, for their stellar handmade belts (there’s an great selection at End.) The company, located in Parma, Italy, has been in business for more than 50 years and was started by Carlo Valenti, who learned the ins and outs of belt making from master craftsmen at a Parma leather factory before striking out on his own in 1966.

A fanatic for British clothing, Valenti named the company after the famed Savile Row tailors Anderson and Sheppard. The brand continues to exude classic English style matched with Italian craftsmanship under the guidance of Carlo’s son, Riccardo, who is head designer, following the death of his father a decade ago. Anderson’s has expanded into luxury bag making and are producing some of the finest travel duffels around, in both leather and other materials.

Check out the Leather Racing Stripe Duffel Bag (at top, $1,195 at Bloomingdales). Made from buttery soft calfskin leather, the bag has a bold blue racing stripe in the center and features a double zip entry into the roomy main compartment, an internal zippered pocket and two open internal pockets. At 19 inches long it’s big enough to carry what you need for a weekend trip but still fits within the size limits for most airlines. There’s an adjustable leather shoulder strap as well as double top handles for easy carrying.

Another variation is their woven duffle, above, which you can  you can pick up at Club Monaco for $799 (regular price: $1,250). Riccardo Valenti told us recently that it was a painstaking process to produce this bag, inspired by the company’s well-known woven belts that have been a signature product since the company’s early days. The woven duffle is made from an elasticized fabric that has a nice bit of stretch so you can fit all your travel needs. The interior is roomy and fully lined; the exterior has a beautiful woven pattern and soft calfskin trim and a removable shoulder strap.
