After a successful collaboration last summer, Club Monaco has again paired up with legendary surfwear brand Katin to release a line of shorts and t-shirts. The partnership is part of the retailer's Made in the USA series, which spotlights domestically produced menswear staples with a heritage feel. No brand embodies Southern California beachwear quite like Katin, which has been making board shorts in Huntington Beach since the 1950s, before surfing had even caught on as a popular sport.
Aaron Levine, Club Monaco's vice president of men's design, was drawn to Katin's legacy as a brand beloved by some of the country's first surfers. "Guys are putting more thought into how they dress, even at the beach," he says. "They care about the craft, durability, and design of what they're wearing."
Last year's line was full of classic, colorful pieces such as navy, red, and purple swim trunks and palm tree-patterned shirts and hats. This summer's line is more toned down, with lighter washes, lots of solids, and an emphasis on shades of blue and gray.
Jason Rodriguez, the creative director of Katin's menswear, said his design team tried to imagine what clothes might look like after a journey through the desert. The outcome was "softened, sun-bleached colors" and items that looked like they'd been lovingly worn for years. "We wanted the shorts to feel like your favorite, worn-in surf shorts," he said, likening the fading process to a quality pair of jeans. "After each wear and wash they will fade, crease, and soften to create a unique, one of a kind pair of trunks."
