Fairhope, Alabama's classic shop Lyonstate is a go-to source for the top brands in menswear, carrying labels like Billy Reid, A.P.C., and Oak Street Bootmakers. Lyonstate's stock is pretty much guaranteed to be well-made and eminently wearable (nothing too crazy) so we were curious when we heard that the shop was launching its first in-house collection. Masterful curators aren't always great artists.
The results are impressive. The new line is full of clean and functional basics like sanded chino shorts, gingham dress shirts, and short-sleeved button-downs that actually look cool (in striped linen and oxford). The collection's standout is the great chambray shirt: Made from a lightweight yet dense Japanese fabric ("In New England," as the shirt's label attests), it features a slim point collar, a single utility chest pocket, and a tailored fit. Our favorite aspect is the slightly stiff chambray itself, which stands in contrast to the structureless, extra-washed approach of some other brands. This makes Lyonstate's button-down particularly suitable for the office – it pairs just as well with dress pants and a tie as with jeans. And two washes to choose from – a bright light blue and a darker classic blue – means having twice as much to work with. [$130; lyonstate.com]
