Independence Day never fails to bring out the loudest and proudest of red-white-and-blue get-ups. But for those in search of a more subtle approach, Cole Haan has released three patriotic-themed shoes that lean more barbecue than frat party. The brand's 4th of July pack dresses two of its most popular styles – the long wingtip and the chukka – in classic American colors.
Even though the silhouettes are on the dressy side, the soles are made with LunarGrand, a thick, flexible foam material that gives them a casual and sporty look. Named after Lunarlon, the concept was initially developed in 2012 as a collaboration with Nike to bring sneaker-style soles to dress shoes. It was also a way to add unusual colors and patterns to shoes by way of a contrasting sole, something that has become a bit of a Cole Haan trademark.
The shoes in the 4th of July pack are by no means plain – on the canvas wingtip, for example, the beige upper is speckled with thick black and white paint drips – but they're versatile enough to justify spending a few extra bucks. Each of the shoes can be worn in any season without looking overly festive. Our pick is the Lunargrand Long Wingtip in chili pepper red with a white-and-blue sole. Traditional, but not boring, it's a worthy addition to any wardrobe. [$228, colehaan.com]
