Recent reports reveal that 92 percent of sunscreens fail to block the sun’s most harmful ultraviolet rays (read the full article here). Here are five more ways you can protect yourself.
-
SPF Shirt
A plain white T-shirt will protect you from 86 percent of the sun’s rays. But if you really want to block the sun, invest in a shirt like Columbia’s Silver Ridge, which keeps out 98 percent ($55; columbia.com).

-
UV Sunsense Wristband
Apply lotion to the UV Sunsense Wristband at the same time you cover yourself; when the band fades to lavender, its time to reapply ($7; uvsunsense.com).

Broad-brimmed hat
Since ears and noses stick out into the sun, dermatologists recommend hats with at least a five-inch wraparound brim, like O’Neill’s Sonoma ($20; oneill.com).
UV-blocking shades
To prevent cataracts, buy wraparound frames with lenses that block at least 99 percent of UVB and 95 percent of UVA rays, like Oakley’s Fuel Cells ($150; oakley.com).
Rash guard
Regular T-shirts stretch once they’re wet and let UVs in. A surfer’s rash guard is designed for long stints in the water ($29; quiksilver.com).
