Establish Your Base
What's the most important layer for winter comfort? Next-to-skin, of course.

Like women's lingerie or google's secret search algorithm, the winter base layer is one of those essentials that you don't always see but can't live without. It should keep you warm and dry, and fit snugly enough that you don't get irritating wrinkles. Most important, it should feel so good you'll forget you're wearing it. The latest shirts wick sweat more efficiently, resist wind, and maximize mobility. --Geoff Van Dyke

Under Armour | Streaker
A versatile long-sleeve trainer made from two fabrics (95 percent microfiber polyester and 5 percent elastane), the Streaker works as well on its own as it does as a base layer. It's lightweight, too: only 5 oz. [$40; underarmour.com]

66°North | Vik Zip Neck
Lined with soft, wicking microfleece, this stretchy pullover sports a wind-resistant nylon outer layer so versatile you can wear it against your skin or as a midlayer. [$120; 66northus.com]

2(x)ist | Henley
A buttoned placket, the signature feature of Henleys, provides ventilation the old-fashioned way. Pima cotton feels luxurious against the skin, which makes it an ideal choice for a post-hike beer. [$30; 2xist.com]

Duofold | Varitherm
The Varitherm has moisture-managing fabric that stretches four ways for a custom, formfitting feel. Available in three weights: silk, mid, and expedition. [$21Ð$42; duofold.com]
