No longer novelties, the new softshells are more versatile than ever

Still not sure exactly what a softshell is? That's not surprising. The newest category of outerwear has been something of a moving target. Essentially, softshells are water- and wind-resistant, all-purpose jackets that bring together the best aspects of your fleece and shell. Many are highly breathable for aerobic sports like trail running, while others add fleece for stop-start activities like alpine skiing. We tested 12 models against the Great Lakes' wind and rain and Colorado's snow and sunshine. Our five favorites fit every need and budget but won't go soft against the elements.

EDITORS' PICK
Arc'teryx | Gamma MX
The MX (short for "mixed use") is an appropriate moniker for an 18-oz jacket that combines top-shelf wind- and water-resistant materials great for climbing and hiking. An extra $50 buys a helmet-compatible hoodie version. [$300; arcteryx.com]
RATING:

Cloudveil | Headwall
Cloudveil made softshells before people knew how to define them. The 22-oz Headwall's Gore Windstopper fabric scoffs at 40-mph gusts, while a velvety-soft fleece lining on the inside kept us toasty. [$250; cloudveil.com]
RATING:

Mountain Hardwear | Offwidth
Ideal for aerobic activity, the Offwidth proves amazingly breathable. The 19-oz jacket rejects sleet and cuts the wind, a credit to the stretchy polyester-nylon material. [$95; www.mountainhardwear.com]
RATING:

Moonstone | Gendarme
The cleanly styled Gendarme is, in many ways, a classic softshell: water-resistant until a downpour. We loved the 18.5-oz jacket's wraparound chin guard, chamois-lined pockets, and hem draw cord that's adjustable with one hand. [$150; www.moonstone.com]
RATING:

Ground | Climate
Waterproof and highly breathable, the Climate's fabric feels especially soft and supple. The 21-oz jacket, which features a roll-up hood and taped seams, stuffs into its own back pocket -- perfect if you carry a pack skiing. [$360; groundwear.com]
