Maine: Mount Desert Island
Off the Maine coast, Mount Desert Island is a postcard-perfect East Coast getaway with a small-town sense. Each year, millions of tourists visit the Acadia National Park, which celebrates its centennial in 2016. Hike the various trails around mountains, woodlands, and lakes, or bike along the 45 miles of well-maintained, scenic carriage roads. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowmobile riding, and ice climbing. For a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can fly in a World War II North American T-6 “Texan” offered by Acadia Air Tours. There are plenty of dining options at Mount Desert Island, including vegetarian-friendly dishes at the casual Cafe This Way. Of course, while you’re in Maine, you’ll want lobster, and you can’t go wrong with the generous lobster roll at C-Ray Lobster.
