After 2008’s Hurricane Ike destroyed 40,000 trees in Galveston Island, residents and environmentalists turned the dead oak trees into sculptures displayed all over town, which you can see by taking a self-guided driving tour. Another major draw is The Strand Historic District, a National Historic Landmark District where Victorian buildings house restaurants, shops, and museums. Heart-palpitating rides such as the 200-foot-tall Texas Star Flyer and classic Gulf Glider swing carousel line The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier that stretches over the Gulf of Mexico waters.
