Take a camel to India's Jaisalmer Desert Festival
Jaisalmer is an opulent oasis in the heart of India’s Thar Desert that lures tourists with the chance to set off on multiday camel treks along ancient trade routes. Known as the Golden City thanks to its yellow sandstone architecture, this sleepy outpost comes alive each February for the colorful Jaisalmer Desert Festival. The three-day event brings people together from across the Indian state of Rajasthan for folk concerts, camel racing, fire dancing, turban-tying, and other competitions — including one for the longest mustache. The festival will run from February 8–February 10 in 2017, with many events taking place in the soaring Sam Sand Dunes 25 miles out of town.
