Become an urban explorer in Edmonton, Canada.
Mention Edmonton, Canada, and visions of a dreary oil town may come to mind. But Alberta's capital is actually home to the largest expanse of urban parkland in North America along the North Saskatchewan River valley — some 27,394 acres of parks, 37 miles of cycle paths, and 250 miles of hiking trails. This frigid city bursts to life each summer not only with urban adventures, but also cultural ones, including the largest fringe festival outside of Edinburgh (Aug 17-27). Edmonton also makes a great launch pad for visits to nearby Jasper National Park, which boasts hot springs, verdant river valleys, and the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield. Expect up to 17 hours of sunlight over the summer months.
