Camp with wild horses on Assateague Island.
Surprisingly close to the tawdry boardwalk of Ocean City, Assateague Island offers the Mid-Atlantic's most peaceful stretch of isolated beaches, salt marshes, and scraggly maritime forests. This barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia is largely protected as a national seashore, in part thanks to its resident population of wild horses. Sleep in their midst at the two oceanside and four bayside camping areas (all located on the Maryland side of the island). You can also rent kayaks from Assateague Outfitters to paddle the bay in search of shorebirds.
