Steal His Summer: John Burke, President of Trek

Make a Race a Tradition

“In 2005 I was in France and heard about this 112-mile ride, L’Étape du Tour. I thought, ‘OK, I’ll put my game face on.’ I got to the start, and 10,000 people were lined up. It wasn’t a ride; it was a race. There were stages, and you had to get to each stage by a certain time. It was 103 degrees, there was no water, and my heart was pounding out of my chest. I had to finish the final stage by 4 p.m.; I got there at 4:08. I felt destroyed but determined to finish it the next year. And I did. I’ve done that race every year since, and I will until I’m 70.”
