Eat a ‘Table-to-Farm’ Meal in California
Most of us are familiar with the concept of farm-to-table by now, but what happens when you flip the equation and bring the table to the farm? That’s the objective behind chef Jim Denevan’s Outstanding in the Field project, which stages outdoor dinners in farms around the world to help remind people that the story of food is also the story of the place from which it came. This culinary road show places the importance on the farmer, rather than the chef, and began with three simple meals at California farms in 1999. That figure rose to eight by 2003 and is now close to 100 pop-up dinners in nearly a dozen countries in 2017. Denevan and his team will return to their roots this June with events at farms up and down California from a vineyard in Napa Valley to an abalone farm in San Luis Obispo and an olive grove near San Diego. Expect one large table, communal dining, and a few dozen fellow locavores.
