Follow the Midnight Sun Across Swedish Lapland
June is the best month of the year to chase the midnight sun across northern Sweden. Ideally, you’ll want to be at, or north of, the Arctic Circle in tourist-friendly towns such as Jokkmokk, Gällivare, or Abisko, the latter of which goes 56 days without a single sign of darkness. With a soft-glowing sun hanging low in the sky you’ll have fantastic conditions for nature photography the entire month as you explore the rugged wilds of Lapland. Swedes honor the summer solstice (June 21) with one of the most important holidays of the year: Midsummer. Celebrations fall on the weekend immediately following the solstice in 2017 and include devouring pickled herring, drinking copious amounts of schnapps, and dancing around a maypole.
