Go on Safari in Sri Lanka
Africa may boast the Big Five, but tiny Sri Lanka has its very own Big Three in the endemic elephants, sloth bears, and leopards that roam its semi-arid scrublands. Add wild water buffalo, skittering macaques, and googly-eyed lorises to the mix, and you’ll see why this tear-shaped island nation off the southern coast of India claims to offer the best safari experience outside Africa (and for a lot less). Yala National Park in the southeastern corner of Sri Lanka has one of the highest leopard densities in the world and is the safari destination of choice. Visit in May before the summer rains make this part of the country inaccessible.
