Light Some Candles for Loi Krathong in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Need a good excuse to book a ticket to Thailand this month? We’ve got two words for you: Loi Krathong. This awe-inducing “festival of lights” falls between November 13–15 in 2016, where small lotus-shaped boats are launched into rivers, and thousands of illuminated lanterns are released into the skies. Skip Bangkok (where the holiday is relatively new) and head to the serene northern city of Chiang Mai instead, where there will be parades, beauty contests, and hundreds of thousands of lanterns floating down the Ping River as it snakes through town. Stick around after the festival and you can go on a multiday jungle trek in the hills above Chiang Mai or even abseil down a waterfall in the nearby Doi Inthanon National Park.
