The Andaman Islands

Why it's controversial: Human rights group Survival International has accused the Indian government of failing to address the issue of "human safaris" in the Andaman Islands, where tourists ride through a reserve of the indigenous Jarawa tribe and "effectively treat the Jarawa like animals in a zoo." The U.K.-based organization has asked people not to vacation on the islands until the human safaris are stopped.

Instead go to: The Lakshadweep Islands, an equally remote archipelago off the coast of India that has recently opened up to tourism in a more sustainable way, with a permit system enabling foreigners to visit only a handful of the coral-lined isles.
