Rent an Airstream

When it debuted in 1931, the Airstream trailer was the most stylish thing on the road – "Fifth Avenue on wheels," gushed company founder Wally Byam. That ethos lives on at Airstream 2 Go. The company is the only place in the world where you can rent a shiny, new Airstream – and it's a beauty: The International Signature Series trailers feature futuristic interiors created by designer Christopher Deam, and are outfitted with Egyptian-cotton bedding and fine cookware and toiletries. If a Winnebago is a functional but slightly frumpy motel, an Airstream is a sleek boutique. "It's a luxury hotel on wheels," says George Grunebaum, an asset manager from Bedford, New York, who recently traveled with his family down the California coast.

Airstream 2 Go keeps 22 trailers spread across outposts in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Bozeman, Montana. For between $5,000 and $7,000 a week, it will rent you one, hitched to a GMC Yukon Denali. You'll get lessons on towing the trailer and setting it up at campgrounds. And for a small fee, the company will make campground reservations and provide an itinerary – including classics like Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon via Zion National Park, or custom trips, such as a California surf getaway.
