This weekend, mount up for a weekend of skijoring in Whitefish, Montana. Or, if you don’t fancy being towed by a horse at high speeds while slaloming and launching off ski jumps, watch from the sidelines with a hot beverage. Or, ski the normal way: nearby Whitefish Mountain Resort boasts an average of 300 inches of annual snowfall on its 94 marked trails.
The annual skijoring competition is held in conjunction with the Whitefish Winter Carnival, held Feb. 5 through 7; this year’s event celebrates Glacier National Park’s centennial. Whitefish is served by Glacier Park International Airport, but a limited number of airlines and flights touch down there, so be sure to leave time for connecting flights.
Rolex 24 at Daytona, January 30-31

The year’s auto racing season kicks off this weekend at Daytona International Speedway with the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Even die-hard racing fans will need a break from the 24-hour action on the track, though. Luckily, there are plenty of diversions on hand, beginning with a 5-k run-walk that takes place just before the pro drivers take to the pavement.
Splurge for the $535-per-person Rolex Executive Suite package and watch the action from a climate-controlled room. Take a trip to “Taste of the 24″ at any time for live music, drinks, food from local restaurants, or to hit the cigar bar.
Chili lovers can enter their recipe or sample many others at the Chili Cook-Off. For more refined palates, the wine and cheese party should suffice.
