The Man Who Skied Down Everest (1975)
This beauty won a Best Documentary Oscar in 1975. Directors Bruce Nyznik and Lawrence Schiller tell the story of Japanese alpinist Yuichiro Miura, who was 37 when he skied down Mount Everest in 1970, covering 6,600 feet in two minutes and 20 seconds. Armed with a parachute that narrowly stopped him (after a fall of 1,300 feet) from tumbling to his death, he credits a higher power with keeping him alive. Watching Miura and his team of Sherpas (six of whom died in a cave-in) make the 62-day trip to Everest Base Camp is a heart-stopping adventure in itself.
