The world is divided into 196 individual nations, and each offers a unique opportunity for adventure. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of 196 high-spirited excursions, one for every country. Some are relatively simple — spearfishing for lobster in the Bahamas, say, or camping in Kyrgyzstan’s Celestial Mountains. Others can’t be done at all — Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia, for example, are off-limits to most Westerners these days. Other regions — like Afghanistan’s epic Wakhan Corridor and Mali’s otherworldly Dogon region — aren’t technically closed, but require hard work and a serious appetite for risk. But in a way, that’s the whole idea. “Adventure is putting yourself outside of your comfort zone,” says British explorer Levison Wood, who just finished walking the entire length of the Himalayas, from Afghanistan to Bhutan, a trek recounted in a memoir, Walking the Himalayas. “The point is to discover new things about yourself,” he says. “In order to do that, you have to push yourself in places that you’ve never been before.”
