Denali Highway (AK)
The Roads: Alaska Route 8 is a stunning stretch that connects the Richardson and Parks Highways, but squeamish riders should note that the road deteriorates into a challenging, brutally pockmarked trail after the first 21 miles of paved surface.
Stay: While campgrounds are available along this 135-mile route, the only lodge that's open year-round is the McLaren River & Lodge (not that you'll be tackling this road on two wheels outside of summertime).
Inside Tip: Weather can be a hazard, as can the wildlife, which often finds its way in the path of moving vehicles.
