11. Oregon Desert Trail, Sections 13 & 14, Steens Mountain, Oregon (42 miles)
Learn MoreThe ODT is a mammoth 750-mile trail system that carves through Oregon’s scenic high desert. The best part, according to Sage Clegg, is the Steens Mountain section. “Steens is a great adventure,” she says. “A four or five day traverse will take you to eastern Oregon’s most incredible spots. But you want to be in mountain shape.” At French Glen, the trail enters the Steens, a huge fault-block range stretching some 50-miles, as it rises 4,000-feet from the Alvord Desert to a peak elevation of 9,733. You end in Alvord Hot Springs, a natural Jacuzzi with man-made sitting pools.
