34. The Lakeshore Trail, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan (42.4 miles)Learn More
Hands-down Michigan’s most spectacular trail, and arguably the finest summertime hike in the Midwest. The aptly named route hugs the Lake Superior shoreline from Munising to Grand Marais in the Upper Peninsula, affording ample cliff-top vistas, waterfalls, white-sand beaches, and high rolling dunes. Rarely do you ever loose sight of the shore, and even more rarely do you encounter fellow travelers. Here’s something to know about the UP: Nobody lives there. We’re talking about one of God’s sub-contracted Edens practically vacuumed of people. Beaver, fox, mink, and black bear abound, and elk and moose aren’t uncommon. Nowadays, even the occasional wolf roams these woods.
