Backcountry Camp in the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area
The Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, comprising some 125,000 acres of Kentucky and Tennessee, is off the radar of even most Southerners. But this is one of the most idyllic spots in the South, with miles of gorges, sandstone bluffs, and an extensive cave system. In late summer and fall, the place is blazing with native wildflowers, and you may come across some of its rare wildlife, like bobcats and river otters. Trailheads start at the Bandy Creek Visitors Center outside Oneida, TN.
