A Skydive Instructor Set Her Parachute on Fire to Prove a Point

Watch this jumper demonstrate the importance of a backup parachute — by lighting her primary chute on fire with a flare gun mid-fall. Professional skydiving instructor Brianne Thompson is seen freefalling with a giant plume of fire and smoke flaring up behind her in the YouTube video, posted by her employer, Arizona-based AXIS flight school. After a few seconds of freefall, she seamlessly switches to a second parachute. While incineration isn’t usually what comes to mind when you think of a parachute malfunction, Thompson does illustrate how important it is to always be prepared for anything once you’re up in the air.
