While a dog can be the ultimate adventure partner, not every pooch is cut out for exploring the rugged outdoors. If you want a true companion, you need to find one with a personality and build that’s as up-for-anything as you are.
Best Friends Animal Society, a nationwide network of no-kill animal sanctuaries, recently teamed up with Ruffwear, a dog adventure gear brand, to specifically place adventurous dogs with outdoorsy owners. Sherry Woodard, an animal behavior specialist for the group, says that it takes a bit of time to figure out which dogs are really right for this program. “It has more to do with personality than their breed,” says Woodard. “We recently had a Rottweiler returned because he didn’t want to jog. There are plenty of rotties that want to go all day, but this wasn’t one of them.”
To make sure your next dog is up for action, you need to look for a few key traits when you go to pick out your next pooch. Choose wisely and whenever you ask, “do you want to go outside?” your dog will always beat you to the door.
