Are you the type of person who tweets on your phone….while you surf on your laptop….while you listen to your iPod…while you watch TV? Well, that’s called media multi-tasking, and it is linked to less gray matter in the brain, a new study suggests.
The research, published in the journal PLOS One, sampled 75 computer and media-savvy adults, and those who reported heavier media multi-tasking also had less matter in their anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). This region controls emotions, particularly negative emotions. Reduced ACC matter has been associated with socio-emotional disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and addictive disorders, according to the Huffington Post.
Though the study is inconclusive about whether media multi-tasking causes less gray matter or if people with less gray matter are more likely to multi-task, previous studies have shown that multi-tasking is not productive. The wise thing to takeaway is not to put down all electronics, but to focus on one thing at a time.
