Are Your Devices Destroying Your Brain?

Devices killing brain main

Are you the type of person who tweets on your phone….while you surf on your laptop….while you listen to your iPod…while you watch TV? Well, that’s called media multi-tasking, and it is linked to less gray matter in the brain, a new study suggests.

The research, published in the journal PLOS One, sampled 75 computer and media-savvy adults, and those who reported heavier media multi-tasking also had less matter in their anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). This region controls emotions, particularly negative emotions. Reduced ACC matter has been associated with socio-emotional disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and addictive disorders, according to the Huffington Post

Though the study is inconclusive about whether media multi-tasking causes less gray matter or if people with less gray matter are more likely to multi-task, previous studies have shown that multi-tasking is not productive. The wise thing to takeaway is not to put down all electronics, but to focus on one thing at a time.
