The learning curve for whitewater SUP can be daunting. Beyond the proper equipment—a solid inflatable board, a sturdy river-ready paddle, a trustworthy PFD and a well-suited leash—it requires an understanding of whitewater motion and a skill set to harness that motion with minimal plunges. Whitewater SUP pioneer Dan Gavere helped develop that skill set and of all the techniques in his arsenal, bracing is one of the most important on the river.
